China's Dowager Empress Cixi (Tz'u-hsi or Xianhuanghou, among alternate romanizations) is shown here in a photograph taken at the Summer Palace about 1903. She believed herself a figure of compassion to her people, and sometimes dressed as the bodhisattva Guan Yin (Kwan Yin or Kuan Yin). Her chief eunuch, Li Lien-ying, is shown at the right in this photograph.
