Born February 3, 1821, Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to graduate from medical school with an M.D. She was also a pioneer in educating women in medicine, in England and in America. Blackwell was from a British family that moved to the United States when Elizabeth was 11 and became active in the abolitionist movement.
