Women Cigar Makers Organize

By , About.com Guide

In the late 19th century, women made up a significant portion of the cigar makers. The Cigar Makers International Union was male-only, so in Cuba and Tampa, Florida, women were instrumental in forming La Resistencia. This organization began as a social club in 1895, and led successful strikes in 1899 and 1901. After 1901 in Tampa, La Resistencia's influence declined and the Cigar Makers' International Union gained prominence.

In 1910-1911, women tried organizing cigar makers into the Woman's Union Label League, but that effort did not have long-term success.
