On August 17, 2008, Dara Torres won the silver medal in the Women's 50-meter Freestyle at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. As the results were posted, Torres turned to Britta Steffan of Germany, who won the gold medal, and congratulated her.

Dara Torres won a total of three medals at the 2008 Summer Games. She also won the silver in the 4x100 meter Freestyle Relay and the 4x100 meter Medley Relay.
With these three medals, Torres raised her total to twelve Olympic medals: four golds, four silvers and four bronzes.
