By , About.com Guide

Mary Travers (November 9, 1936 - September 16, 2009), of the sixties folk revival folksinging group Peter, Paul & Mary (PP&M), is pictured here at several events in 2002 and 2004.

Mary Travers, born in Louisville, grew up in Greenwich Village, New York City. Dropping out of school and becoming a teenage mother, she sang backup with a group called Song Swappers for Folkway Records. She joined with (Noel) Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow in forming the popular trio group in 1961. They performed at the 1963 March on Washington and several Newport Folk Festivals, and became identified with the civil rights and antiwar movements. The group split in 1970 and reformed in 1978, and Mary Travers also recorded solo after 1970. She and the group continued their involvement in human rights issues.

Mary Travers was married four times, and was survived by her fourth husband, Ethan Robbins. She had two daughters and two grandchildren.
