Ella Grasso
Ella Grasso was the first woman in the U.S. elected as a state governor (Connecticut) in her own right - that is, not as a successor to her husband. She served in several other offices, including the U.S. Congress. She resigned for health reasons in 1980 during her second term, and died February 5, 1981.
