Emma Goldman by Carl Van Vechten
Emma Goldman by Carl Van Vechten, 1934
Courtesy Library of Congress, Portraits by Carl Van Vechten collection
Photographer Carl Van Vechten, who was a critic of modern dance, and, in his portraits, photographed many of the famous figures of his time, especially Harlem Renaissance figures. Among his subjects was Emma Goldman, radical. This photograph was taken, apparently, during her brief visit to the United States in 1934, a country which had deported her after World War I.
