Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

The Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) was founded in 1976 with the merging of two unions. One was the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, itself formed in 1914 when the more radical members, led by Sidney Hillman, broke with the United Garment Workers. The other was the Textile Workers Union of America, founded in 1939.

In 1995, ACTWU merged with ILGWU into UNITE.
