Martha Jefferson Randolph, also known as Patsy, in an 1881 engraving by J. Serz. She was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson.

Martha Wayles Skelten Jefferson, wife of Thomas Jefferson, died nineteen years before he became president. During his presidency, he often ask Dolley Madison to be his hostess at public events at the President's House. She was the wife of James Madison, at that time Secretary of State and Jefferson's ranking cabinet member. Aaron Burr, the vice president, was also a widower.
