The "second wave" of feminism spread across the United States during the late 1960s. By 1969, the women's liberation movement had gained media attention and feminists were working for change in education, employment, reproductive rights and other women's issues. Here are a few important events of feminism in 1969:
- At their abortion speakout, members of the feminist group Redstockings insisted that women's voices be heard, not just men's voices, on the issue of abortion.
- The National Organization for Women (NOW) demonstrated in Washington D.C. on Mother's Day, demanding "Rights, not Roses!"
- NOW and other feminists worked to establish Women's Studies programs on college campuses.
