Definition: Conceptual art is art work that focuses or centers on the concept of the piece. This concept could be the subject matter or image depicted, or it could be the reflection in that image of the artist herself. The focus of conceptual art is not on the artist's technical skill or use of materials.
How conceptual art relates to feminism: Artist and theorist Lucy Lippard pointed out that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, conceptual art became an important part of the art world, with an explosion of artists using behavioral narrative in their pieces. For example, women would create art pieces using curlers, household objects, or even tampons to depict their experience as women in their art. Lucy Lippard explained that this increase in conceptual art coincided with the Feminist Art Movement and more women's ideas and questions being heard. Many feminist artists rejected what the art world had traditionally considered good and looked for new ways to tell their stories.
