Daughter of one of the most noted preachers of the day, Harriet Beecher Stowe was educated beyond what most young women of her age were able to experience. None of her later books matched the popularity of Uncle Tom's Cabin but Stowe remained a popular figure. In 1869, an article that she wrote defending a friend created quite a scandal.
