Science has been a field largely closed to women. Sometimes, rules against married women teaching at a university worked against the few women who were able to get degrees and teaching and research work; sometimes nepotism rules meant that a woman quit her job and her husband kept his. Many women worked in the background and supported more visible men in science. But some women worked against the odds and made significant contributions through their work. Meet some of them here: Famous Women Scientists
