Margaret of Scotland, canonized after her death, was the daughter of Edward the Exile, one of the Anglo-Saxon kings of England. Margaret's daughter Edith -- later Matilda -- ruled as queen consort of England, married to Henry I, and brought the Norman and Anglo-Saxon royal lines back together. Matilda was the mother of the Empress Matilda (Maud). Another daughter, Mary, married the Count of Boulogne and was the mother of Matilda of Boulogne who was married to King Stephen, the Empress Matilda's rival for the English crown.
