Queen Mary I of England is remembered for her failed attempt to restore Roman Catholicism to England. Mary I was the daughter of Henry VIII and his first of six wives, Katherine of Aragon, who was the daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain.
Mary was her father's heir, after her much-younger brother Edward VI, and after a failed attempt to make Lady Jane Grey the queen. In the battle between her mother and father over Henry's attempt to annul his marriage to Katherine, Mary was declared illegitimate, and her status as an heir was uncertain for many years.
