Julia Gillard succeeded Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister of Australia. Rudd stood down in the face of falling support. Julia Gillard was sworn in on June 24, 2010, becoming the first woman prime minister of Australia. As deputy prime minister since 2007, she served as acting prime minister during Rudd's absence from the country for an international conference in 2007.

Julia Gillard (September 29, 1961 - ) was born in Wales and emigrated with her family at the age of four. She began her university studies at University of Adelaide, and graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1986, earning Bachelor of Arts and Laws degrees. In 1998, she was elected to Parliament, having studied law at the University.

Never married, her partner since 2006 has been Tim Mathieson.

Because she has no belief in a God, she was sworn in with an affirmation in assuming the office of prime minister in 2010.
