1908 photo of two girls from North Carolina who work in the textile mills. The oldest girl works 10 hour days for fifty cents, the younger works more irregularly.

The older girl works 10 hour days, six days a week, for fifty cents a day. as a spinner working four sides. The younger girl also works in the mill, though not as regularly. Photo is by famed photographer Lewis Hines for the National Child Labor Committee, which worked to restrict the hours and improve conditions of and, eventually, to end most child labor.
