After the Civil War, many institutions of higher learning were founded to serve freedmen (and women). Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in Hampton, Virginia, was one of these institutions. This 1899 photograph by photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston shows a co-ed science classroom studying phases of the moon.
