Which State Ratified the ERA During 1977?
Indiana was the only state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment during 1977. It was also the last state thus far to ratify the proposed amendment.
Indiana's ERA ratification brought the total to 35 states, but the Constitution requires three-fourths of state legislatures to approve an amendment, which would be 38 out of the 50 states. No additional states ratified after Indiana, despite a hard-won three-year deadline extension. The ERA is still not a part of the U.S. Constitution.
