One state ratified the Equal Rights Amendment in 1975. The only state to ratify the ERA during 1975 was North Dakota.
When the Senate approved the proposed amendment in March 1972, feminists felt confident about eventual ERA ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures. Twenty-two states had already voted yes by the end of 1972. In 1973, eight more states approved the amendment, and many equality activists still felt confident. However, the ratification rate slowed drastically in 1974, with only three states added to the yes column. The slow pace continued in 1975, with North Dakota the sole state to ratify that year.
North Dakota brought the total to 34 ratified states. The requirement was 38 out of 50 states - that is, three-fourths of the states. Unfortunately, only one more state later ratified after North Dakota, so the total stayed at 35 and the ERA did not become part of the Constitution before the deadline.
