Brigit Nilsson died December 25, 2005, though her family kept the death secret until her January funeral. A Swedish soprano with a powerful voice, daughter of farmers, she was best known for her roles as Isolde in "Tristan and Isolde" (she sang the role more than 200 times) and Brunnhilde in Wagner's Ring Cycle. She performed for more than 40 years, and her image in the Brunhilde role is iconic.
