Clara Barton was given the deed to this house at no cost, as the original developers of Glen Echo thought that having a famous resident would help attract visitors to the summer Chautauqua events, and lead some to buy property for summer homes in the neighborhood. A rumor about malaria helped kill the project, and the developers sold their interests, but Barton ended up with her home and used it to house the American Red Cross offices for several years.
