Women were not part of the astronaut program when it first began -- there was originally a requirement that astronauts be military test pilots, and no women had such experience. But after one attempt ending in 1960 to include women, women were finally admitted to the program. Here is an image gallery of some of the notable women astronauts from NASA history.
