Those honored at Oprah Winfrey's The Legends Ball in 2005 included a heavy dose of entertainment figures, especially singers and actresses. Some were included who were known more for their political work: Coretta Scott King, for example.
One of the least known of those included was Elizabeth Catlett (1915 - 2012). Catlett was born in Washington, DC, and studied art at Howard University. In 1947, she married a Mexican artist, Francisco Mora, and moved to Mexico, where she lived for the rest of her life.
In the 1960s and 1970s, many of her works featured black women and men, with heavily political themes. One of her best known works was the 1969 Malcolm X Speaks for Us; her works often featured strong black women. She is known for prints and sculpture.
