Eleanor Roosevelt at home with her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt. This 1920 photograph was taken while FDR was the Vice Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, about a year before he was stricken with paralysis.

Married in 1905 to her dashing fifth cousin, Eleanor soon found that her mother-in-law would have considerable control over the couple's lives. Two years before this photo was taken, Eleanor found out that Franklin had been having an affair with Eleanor's social secretary, Lucy Mercer, and threatened to leave him if he did not end the affair -- and Sara threatened to disinherit Franklin if he divorced. (He later resumed the affair.)
