1818: Mary Todd Lincoln born (First Lady)
1862: Battle of Fredericksburg. Frank Thompson, aide to Colonel Orlando M. Poe, was born as Sarah Edmonds (Edmonson or Edmondson). Later, she worked as a nurse for the US Christian Commission and published a book of Civil War experiences. She was granted a veteran's pension in 1882.
1883: Belle da Costa Greene born (librarian, bibliographer)
