    1135: Henry I of England died. His named heir, the Empress Matilda, was unable to travel to England. Stephen of Blois, her cousin and nephew of Henry I, had himself crowned at Westminster Abbey. The two fought a bloody civil war over the succession.

    1813: Ann Preston born (physician, educator)

    1847: Christine Ladd-Franklin born (mathematician, psychologist)

    1913: Mary Martin born (actor)

    1955: first day of the trial of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Also the first day of the Montgomery Bus boycott, called to end bus segregation and in recognition of the Rosa Parks trial.
