    1154: King Stephen of England died. By agreement with his cousin Matilda, widowed empress and claimant the English crown, the succession went to Henry Plantagenet, age 21. With this succession, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, became Queen of England.

    1692: Elisabeth Farnese born (princess of Parma, queen of Spain)

    1764: Abigail Smith (letter writer, First Lady) married John Adams

    1771: Catherine Kaidyee Blaikley died (Virginia midwife who delivered, in her words, "upwards of three Thousand Children")

    1782: Deborah Sampson Gannat was dismissed from the Continental Army when her disguise (as Robert Shurtleff) was discovered

    1803: Maria van Ackere-Doolaeghe born (poet)

    1837: Anna Richardson Harkness born (philanthropist)

    1892: Carline Lavinia Scott Harrison died (First Lady)

    1939: nylon stockings first sold in the U.S.

    1941: Anne Tyler born (writer)
