    1688: Mary of Modena, queen consort of James II of Great Britain, gave birth to a son, James, who was widely rumored to be a changeling or substitute who would, if he succeeded to the crown, restore Roman Catholicism

    1692: Bridget Bishop became the first "witch" of Salem Village to be hanged, as part of the Salem witch craze

    1822: Lydia White Shattuck born (scientist)

    1833: Pauline Cushman born (actress, Civil War spy)

    1835: Rebecca Latimer Felton born (reformer, writer, Lady Manager at 1893 Columbian Exposition, first woman Senator - briefly held office as an interim and addressed the Senate once)

    1856: Caroline Hazard born (writer, educator)

    1861: Dorothea Dix appointed Superintendent of Female Nurses, Union Army

    1895: Hattie McDaniel born - first African American to win an Oscar

    1922: Judy Garland born as Frances Gumm (actress, singer)

    1982: Tara Lipinski born (Olympic gold medal figure skater)
