Encyclopedia of Women's History
You're invited to participate

Women's History is a cooperative project -- many have contributed to increasing knowledge about the roles and contributions of women through history. The cooperative spirit of women historians helping other women historians has meant that our knowledge about women's history -- relatively new as a serious substudy within the larger study of history -- has exploded in the last thirty-five years.

I'd like to invite you, the readers of this site, to contribute to an exciting new project, as we try to build the largest Encyclopedia of Women's History ever using the strengths of the Internet.

If you've done research on a topic within women's history, or just know something about some topic, you can take part in this project.

What is the Encyclopedia of Women's History?

It's actually very simple.  The Encyclopedia, part of this Women's History site, will consist of a series of pages, each one highlighting and describing one topic or person in one to four paragraphs. Wherever possible, I'd like to see one or more references for the information -- on the Net or in a print resource like a book or article -- and several related links to information on this site or elsewhere on the Net, so that users who find the page can look further if they want more detail.

I've made it simple to contribute.  I've put more detailed directions on a separate page, and also provided some online forms to gather the information.

I've included links to a few sample pages below.

Your name in print -- if you want it there

If your contribution is accepted for the online encyclopedia, you are welcome to include your real name or a nickname as the credit line.  (For legal purposes, we ask that you include your real name when you submit the article and give us permission to reprint it online, but your real name will be on the article only if you indicate that it's okay to do put it there.)  You can also link your name or nickname to your email address if you'd like to hear from readers of your contribution, or you can link your credit line to your online personal or professional website.  It's a great way to build traffic to your pages! You can, of course, choose not to link to your email address nor a web page.

Whether you choose to remain anonymous or take credit for your contribution, you can take pride in your part in building this project and helping more Internet users find out even more about women's history.

When will I see the Encyclopedia?

I've already begun creating pages, and put a few online as samples.  The project will go online in January, 2001, with whatever entries I have at that time.  I'll continue to update it as more entries come in.

What will an entry look like?

Here are a few samples:
