The first woman figure skating champion, Madge Syers won the first Olympic gold medal for women's figure skating (1908).

In 1902, Madge Syers came in second in an international figure-skating competition which had not thought to exclude women. The organizers then explicitly banned female athletes from entering the competition. Three years later they added a separate women's event.
