Florence Madge Cave Syers
(1881-1971)
The first woman figure skating champion, she won the first Olympic gold medal for women's figure skating (1908). In 1902, she came in second in an international figure-skating competition which had not thought to exclude women.  The organizers did then ban female athletes from entering the competition, and three years later they added a separate women's event.
