Finland: First Female Prime Minister Resigns

Finland's female president accepts her resignation in document scandal

June 19, 2003
Female prime ministers are more common than they once were, but each new "first female prime minister" and "first woman president" of a nation is an automatic pioneer. Finland's history makers are making a different kind of news as Finland's first female prime minister resigns over a scandal involving leaked documents and the Iraq war, and Finland's first woman president receives her resignation.

Tarja Kaarina Halonen, Finland's president who was elected in January 2000 and who accepted Jaatteenmaki's resignation, was the last of the women presidents and prime ministers elected in the 20th century. If you take a quick look while the picture's still on Finland's official presidential front page, you can see the photo of the president and now former prime minister together.
