Feminist, Labor Activist Dies at 93

Monday March 29, 2004
Millie Jeffrey, the first woman to head a United Auto Workers (UAW) department, died March 24 at age 93. She also helped found the National Women's Political Caucus, is credited for the nomination of Geraldine Ferraro as the first woman nominated by a major political party for US Vice President, and, earlier in her life, was active in the civil rights movement. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton in 2000.
