United States MapThe growing number of women in Congress -- in the House and in the Senate -- is a story often told (see below for some lists of those women). Less commonly told: how many states still have never elected a Senator, a member of the House, or either to the United States Congress.

  • Which States Have Had No Women in Congress? - lists and maps. How many can you guess accurately? How many states selected their first woman Senator in 2013? How many have never had a woman Senator? How many have never had a woman member of the House? Neither?

This story from the Center for American Women and Politics is also a contrast to the usual "growing numbers of women in office" story. The numbers are still higher than in any year before 1995, but the trend is somewhat downwards in recent years.
