The growing number of women in Congress -- in the House and in the Senate -- is a story often told (see below for some lists of those women). Less commonly told: how many states still have never elected a Senator, a member of the House, or either to the United States Congress.

This story from the Center for American Women and Politics is also a contrast to the usual "growing numbers of women in office" story. The proportion of women in statewide elected executive office has shrunk since highs in 1999 and 2001: Facts on Women in Statewide Elected Executive Office. The numbers are still higher than in any year before 1995, but the trend is somewhat downwards in recent years.
