A lasting image of the American Revolution was that of Molly Pitcher, an army wife who was delivering water to the artillerymen when her husband collapsed. So she did what seemed right at the time: she took up the ramrod herself and began loading the cannon. Here's an iconic image of Molly Pitcher from 1859, a few years after the death of John L. Hays was marked with an obituary noting his the role of his mother, Mary Hays McCauley, as "Captain Molly."
