On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan disappeared, not showing up for their expected landing on Howland Island in the Pacific. They were near the end of their attempt to make the first flight around the world. Their disappearance remains a mystery, though some searchers believe they are close to finding evidence of what happened.
