
Mary, Queen of Scots, is known as a tragic figure in European history. Queen of Scotland from the death of her father when she was a week old, she was at the center of the Catholic/Protestant rift in Scotland. She was also the most natural heir to the childless Queen Elizabeth I, though they never met in person, and thus a natural focus for those who wanted to be rid of Elizabeth.
