Maria Tallchief, the first American and first Native American prima ballerina, died on April 11, 2013, at age 88. She was most active as a dancer in the 1940s into the 1960s, then in the 1970s and 1980s worked with ballet schools and the Lyric Opera (Chicago). Read more: Maria Tallchief
