Daughter of a couple who themselves had created something of a scandal, this woman writer herself led a scandalous life. During one "wet, ungenial summer" at Lake Geneva, this woman, with several other poets and intellectuals, including the famous poet she was not yet married to, and by whom she'd already had a son, told ghost stories around a campfire. Out of that experience, she sat down to write a short story that became a novel that has captured the public imagination since.
Who was she?
