Theodora was the most influential and powerful woman in Byzantine history. Theodora became Empress of Byzantium on April 4, 527, as wife of the Emperor Justinian. Theodora's origins are somewhat obscure, but she was certainly an actress since a law that prohibited a patrician from marrying an actress had to be changed to make their marriage legal.
