Maud Younger, from a well-off family, chose to stay for a week in the slums, living in a settlement house. She stayed five years. She worked as a waitress, beginning a union for waitresses. She became a strong advocate for trade unions for women, for protective legislation in the workplace and for women's suffrage, taking an automobile tour across country to promote women's voting rights.
