Women's Religious Movement

In the 12th century, many women in Europe organized religious groups -- sometimes living in communal residences, sometimes at home -- in a movement claiming no founder and operating with no specific rules for the order. The movement came to be called the Beguines, and eventually came under attack by the Vatican as unauthorized and tainted with heresy. Learn more: About the Beguines
