A heroine of the American revolution at the battle of Monmouth in 1778, she's known by a nickname rather than her real name. A servant, the family she worked for was active in the resistance to, and then the war against, the British.

A fitting follow-up to last week’s picture, although my personal heroes of women’s history tend to fall more on the non-violent side.
History in general tends to remember the conflicts of history more than the peaceful resolution of conflict.
U. S. history is filled with stories of brave women like this one – they didn’t all fight in wars, but they fought for important causes and ideals.
I remember this woman’s name but didn’t realize it was given her in honor of her task.
