Born September 6, 1860, Jane Addams was a settlement house reformer, and also a pacifist and women's rights advocate. She practiced a radical kind of "neighborliness" in living among the poor and immigrant population of Chicago, experimenting with programs that would make a better life for these people, and that would allow the children to grow up healthy and educated.
