I’ve often wondered what our perceptions of the Civil War would be if Matthew Brady had not become a photographer. He captured so very many images of battlefields, generals, and the “regular people” of the time.

This reminds me of what I am doing at present… putting together a digital family album, including pictures from my grandparents’ day on to present, and giving as much information as possible on who, what, and where. It is too easy to lose track, especially as one generation succeeds the another.

The clothing seems very cumbersome compared to modern way of dress. I suppose so much was needed for warmth. So much detail went into it’s making. When you think everything was laundered by hand, no wash and wear in those days..

I can only imagine the work someone had to do to pull the corset strings tight underneath that bosom. It makes my ribs hurt just to look at it. Maybe that accounts for the very serious looks on so many pictures of that era.
