On October 7, 2009, a statue of Helen Keller will be unveiled at the U.S. Capitol, where it will be displayed at the Capitol Rotunda before it moves to the main hall of the new Capitol Visitor's Center. The statue represents the state of Alabama in the collection of two statues per state. Alabama had been represented by statues of Joseph Wheeler and Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry. In 2002 Congress allowed states to change which statues represented them in the collection, which has resulted in some states deciding to honor women and members of minority groups. The statue of Curry will go to Samford University in Birmingham.
