On January 6, 1994, fifteen years ago, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked just before the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Kerrigan withdrew because of the injury, and Tonya Harding won the event. It turned out that the attack was instigated by Harding's husband, Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt, who hired Shane Stant to injure Kerrigan so that she could not compete.

Kerrigan was given a berth on the Olympics team anyway, but she narrowly lost the gold medal to Oksana Baiul, who was also skating despite injuries.
