Miriam Makeba, a South African singer and activist, has died in Italy. She was a voice for freedom in South Africa and around the world, though she did not consider herself a political singer and under apartheid, her music was officially banned in her own country. She became popular in the 1960s in the United States, though her marriage to Stokeley Carmichael and her move to Guinea led to a drop in popularity there.
