Maria Tallchief was a pioneer in ballet, as both an American dancer and a Native American dancer. At the Ballet Russe she attracted the attention of George Balanchine, who featured her in many roles, and to whom she was married for six years. Her most famous roles were the title role in The Firebird and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker. Read more: Maria Tallchief
