Harriet Beecher Stowe

Thursday February 28, 2008
Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel on slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin, was well-researched, based mostly on actual anecdotes and experiences. It helped to solidify public opinion in the North and in Europe to oppose slavery. When Harriet Beecher Stowe met President Lincoln in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!"
